PHP Junkies Wanted

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 19, 2007, 11:05 AM

Are you a programmer? Do you know how to work well with PHP, MySQL and distributed database servers? Do you love deviantART? Do you know how to work with linux?

And most importantly: Would you enjoy being a member of the coolest IT development team on this planet? :earth:

If so, we've got good news for you. We're looking for skilled IT developers to expand deviantART's programming team. If you want to contribute to the largest art community in the world, work with other people that share your interests, develop large massively scalable web applications used by thousands of people every second, and get some free deviantWEAR, then you're on the right track.

What we're looking for:
  • People with previous experience on the field (self-taught perfectly acceptable, although MS/BS/PhD is cool too).
  • Expertise with PHP and other server technologies.
  • Knowledge of Javascript, XHTML/CSS and other client-side technologies.
  • Developers who know how to work with SQL in distributed systems.
  • Excitement for solving challenging problems.
  • A preference for vi over emacs.
  • Knowing how and when to have fun!
  • Being at least 18 years old so that you can fix mature-content-related bugs ;P

What we're offering:
  • A $dollar symbol.
  • Being part of a team that you can consult for any of your programming needs at any time.
  • Being able to say "I work for dA".
  • A free cookie for every bug you fix (if we meet in real life, you're literally going to get those). :cookie:
  • Access to innovative technologies, and to some of the most pioneering coding techniques in the industry.
  • More benefits that you can read about below.

(notice that this is a full time paid job, not a volunteer job)

You can work from Los Angeles, or from anywhere else you want (providing it has Internet).

Feeling adventurous? You can optionally solve this riddle for an extra bonus before you apply (or just send us some code examples -- or both!). For more details, just read the job description.

Good luck, and we're hoping to have you aboard soon! :boogie:

  • Mood: Devious
  • Listening to: Sum 41
  • Reading: KMP on networks
  • Watching: Joost
  • Playing: Baldur's Gate Multiplayer
  • Eating: Friday's
  • Drinking: Water

I guess this is one amazing opportunity that I'm going to have to pass up on u_u

How've you been, Dio? Keeping well, I hope

As of today...
I'm on Holiday, I passed my Music Theory exam (By one mark, of course :P), My street is covered with masses of water, and my mp3 player has decided to give up the ghost.

Life is good!

And someone bought me a print, but I don't know who... :paranoid:

Unfortunately, I am under 18, so I can't apply for the job, plus that I must study all the time for the national examinations, during this year. Maybe the next year, guys :-)

PS: I will solve the riddle, as I can see it is a variation of Dijkstra.

From an algorithmic perspective, it's much simpler than Dijkstra. Perhaps you'd like to check with your algorithms manual :) ... although the point isn't as much the algorithm as other things, as you might've already guessed ;)

Feel free to solve the riddle for 5 free buttons, and come back to apply in a year or two if you're still interested =)

Salary/Benefits:
Stock options.
that would imply that dA is thinking of selling stocks? going against everything they've ever said, everything dA is.
ugh.

Hello $dionyziz !

You already know my skills, hope you didn't forget I'm better in XHTML/CSS that in PHP... even my skills are improving.
I started to learn about XML, XSL, XmlHttpRequest and POO in PHP ;)

You must know that I could never work in full time job here because I'm again student and I have not so much time out of lessons and school projects.

But, I could still be here to help you if you have some small works to give me out.

Oh, a question, do you take developpers for summer job? :?

Thank you.

I'm not aware of specific details if you want to check for a part-time job. You could still try to apply. Look at the job description and send an e-mail, perhaps work on a solution for the riddle? You could give it a whirl :)

Hi $dionyziz,

I'd like to know if there is a dead line or not for the riddle? About 10 full-developping-days remain me to finish this work month and I couldn't think about the algo during these days 'cause I have one late day and I have to finish at the 31st.

I really don't know if I'll success the riddle because I'm really bad in mathematics but here it's more logical than mathematic, true? I'll try to send you something good ;)

Thank you again.

vi over emacs! You guys are all my hero! Stephan Richter, a fellow sprinter, has stolen two from our companies' grasp from vi over to emacs. Can you help them atone for their sins? ;)

I would love to do this; dA is the most genuine online community I have ever seen. If only I were just a little bit smarter, older, and well... smarter. ^^;; As an open-source enthusiast working on a school-oriented module, I work with Linux, Python, and Zope3 (and vi!).

Do they really teach one Python/Java/C++/PHP/HTML/CSS at universities nowadays while obtaining BS's?

Arg... hope the right person comes along for the job. We all love :devart:!

I hear they do teach some HTML, CSS, Java, C++, and PHP. Not sure about Python though. At least that's how it is in Greece.

Go for Python though! :)
